Since the deadly attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001, our firm has represented thousands of individuals through the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund provides compensation to those who have suffered illnesses as a result of their exposure to 9/11-related toxins in lower Manhattan south of Canal Street, in the days, weeks and months following 9/11.
Individuals suffering from a 9/11-related illness that was certified by the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program more than two years ago must register with the VCF by July 29th, 2021. This is an important deadline for those seeking compensation for their exposure and subsequent illnesses like respiratory disorders and mental health conditions.
This date is two years from the date of the enactment of the VCF Permanent Authorization Act, which provided an opportunity for individuals who did not know they were eligible to file a claim, to register with the VCF. Here, our VCF attorneys explain how this crucial deadline will affect potential claimants.
Important Information About Upcoming Victim Compensation Fund Deadlines
- If you were diagnosed with a 9/11-related physical health condition that was certified by the WTC Health Program before July 29, 2019, you are required to register with the VCF by July 29, 2021.
- If you were certified by the WTC Health Program for a 9/11-related physical health condition after July 29, 2019, or are certified in the future, you are required to register with the VCF within two years of the date on which your condition was certified by the WTC Health Program. For example, if you were diagnosed with prostate cancer which was certified by the WTC Health Program on May 1, 2020, you have until May 1, 2022 to register with the VCF.
- If you are considering filing a claim for a loved one who you believe died of a 9/11-related physical health condition before July 29, 2019, you are required to register with the VCF by July 29, 2021.
- If you are considering filing a claim for a loved one who you believe died of a 9/11-related condition after July 29, 2019, you are required to register with the VCF within two years of the date of death.
It is important to note that if you were in lower Manhattan south of Canal Street in the days, weeks, or months following September 11th, and are concerned that someday you may be diagnosed with a 9/11-related health condition, you should register as soon as possible. Registering now with the VCF ensures that any claim you may seek to file in the future will be timely. There is no benefit to waiting until you are diagnosed with a 9/11-related illness to register with the VCF. Registering now will avoid the risk of being untimely in the future.
